Johanna Schwanberg

Johanna Schwanberg studied Art History and Literature as well as Painting and Art Edcucation at the University of Vienna and the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, and obtained her doctorate in 2001 with "Bild-Dichtungen” von Günter Brus.

She has served as the Director of Dom Museum Wien since 2013. The museum was renovated and re-opened under her leadership in 2017 with a new concept and design; in 2020, the museum was awarded the Austrian National Museum Prize. Schwanberg holds teaching engagements at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, the Sigmund Freud Private University, and the University of Vienna.

Since 2004, Johanna Schwanberg has been a contributor to the “Gedanken für den Tag” series on Austrian National Public Radio Ö1. Furthermore, she has been publishing texts and essays for media such as „Parnass“, the „Spectrum“ supplement of Austrian daily „Die Presse“, „Furche“, and „Literatur und Kritik“ since 1997.

She is a member of the board of the Otto-Mauer-Fonds and since 2009 has served as a member of the jury awarding the prestigious annual Otto-Mauer-Prize for visual arts. Schwanberg has been a member of the board of ICOM Austria since 2020.

She has worked as a scientist, lecturer, catalogue author and curator for numerous research and exhibition projects by Austrian and international museums and institutions (Albertina, Belvedere, mumok, Lentos, Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften, MACBA, Kunsthalle Kiel, Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art, etc.). From 20072009 she was tasked with expanding the art collection of the city of Linz, and from 20052013 she was a lecturer at the Department of Art Sciences and Philosophy at the Catholic University in Linz.
